The One Thing That Can Change Everything

The word “Wisdom” spelled out in Scrabble tiles on an open Bible, symbolizing biblical wisdom and understanding.

Ever spoken too soon, reacted too quickly, or made a decision you instantly regretted? In the moment, it felt right—maybe even necessary. But later, you wished you had paused, prayed, and chosen differently.

I know that feeling well. I have a habit of jumping in with a solution before someone has even finished explaining their situation. My wife, Rachel, has tried to help me with this over the years. If we’re sitting with someone and I start getting ahead of the conversation, she’ll give me a little squeeze on the leg—a not-so-subtle reminder to listen first. I’ve gotten better (mostly), but let’s just say… I still get the occasional squeeze.

That’s the thing about wisdom. It’s not just about knowing the right answer—it’s about knowing when to speak, when to wait, and when to simply listen.

Proverbs 4:7 tells us, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”

Wisdom isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about applying truth in a way that leads to peace, protection, and purpose. And according to Scripture, it’s worth more than anything else we could pursue.

Why Does Wisdom Matter So Much?

Every day, we make choices—some small, some life-altering. What we say, how we react, the way we spend our time and money, the relationships we build—it all shapes our future. Without wisdom, we end up making decisions based on emotions, pressure, or short-term comfort instead of long-term truth.

The enemy loves to keep us distracted, impulsive, and led by whatever feels good in the moment. But Proverbs 4:6 reminds us, “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.”

Wisdom is more than knowledge. It’s a shield. It guards your heart, your mind, your relationships, and your future.

How Do We Walk in Wisdom?

  • Seek God first. James 1:5 says that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, and He will give it generously. Before making decisions—big or small—pause and pray.

  • Fill your mind with truth. The book of Proverbs is packed with practical wisdom. Spend time in Scripture, let God’s Word shape your thoughts, and allow truth to guide you instead of feelings.

  • Surround yourself with the right voices. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Who are you listening to? Wise counsel can make all the difference.

  • Learn from your mistakes. Sometimes, wisdom comes after failure. Instead of letting regret hold you back, let it refine you. Ask God what He wants to teach you, and move forward with greater discernment.

A Life Built on Wisdom

Wisdom doesn’t just help you make better choices—it leads to a life of confidence, peace, and purpose. When you follow God’s wisdom, you don’t have to second-guess every decision. You can trust that He is guiding you, protecting you, and leading you toward His best.

Are you at a crossroads? Facing a decision that feels overwhelming? Before you rush ahead, pause. Seek wisdom. God is faithful to lead you.

Prayer

Lord, I need Your wisdom. Too often, I rely on my own understanding, and it leads to stress and uncertainty. Teach me to seek You first, to be rooted in Your Word, and to listen to wise counsel. Guard my heart and mind from impulsive decisions, and lead me in the path of wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
